Delta Ducon and the Rise of Blended Cements

The US construction landscape is undergoing a significant shift, with blended cements rapidly becoming the new standard. As the Portland Cement Association (PCA) highlights, this transition is driven by a growing demand for lower-carbon solutions, with sustainability now on par with traditional metrics like resilience and reliability.

The Blended Cement Revolution

Where once traditional portland cement reigned supreme, blended cements, particularly portland-limestone cement (PLC), are now taking center stage. In fact, in some regions, PLC comprises 100% of cement production. This shift is fueled by the substantial environmental benefits these materials offer, boasting up to 10% less embodied carbon than their traditional counterparts.

This evolution has been swift. In 2020, blended cements accounted for a mere 3% of the 100 million metric tons of annual US cement consumption. Fast forward to 2024, and that figure has surged to over half of the total consumption. This transition has yielded significant climate advantages. In 2023 alone, the substitution of traditional portland cement with PLC resulted in the avoidance of more than 3.9 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

Embracing Innovation for a Sustainable Future

While traditional portland cement has served the construction and infrastructure sectors for nearly two centuries, the challenges of today necessitate innovative solutions. Blended cements offer a pathway to achieving ambitious net-zero building goals without compromising project costs.

Moreover, those working with PLC are discovering additional benefits, such as a lighter color that proves advantageous in certain architectural applications, and performance that meets or even exceeds that of traditional cement. Crucially, PLC delivers carbon reduction while maintaining the proven performance that the industry relies upon.

Contractors are finding that PLC can be used as a direct replacement for portland cement, with standard testing procedures ensuring the desired fresh and hardened properties are achieved. The increasing production of PLC in the US is mirrored by its expanding use in projects across the nation, demonstrating its growing acceptance and success.
